Robbers, beware. If you think you know the roads like the back of your hand, you don’t know what you don’t know.
Smash-and-grab thefts have been making headlines around Harare lately and there are numerous opinions about why.
The Zimbabwe Republic Police (Avondale Police Station) announced on Wednesday (06/12/2017) that they are deploying CCTVs to catch smash and grabs on cameras at hotspots around Avondale.
“We are live and rolling out cameras at strategic points/intersections in Avondale. This particular one we are still tweaking so we get a good view and we can identify perps menacing the public through Smash and Grabs amongst other things. We can now also play back after an accident or incident that needs this technology intervention.” Avondle said.
A smash and grab is a particular form of burglary that involves smashing a barrier, usually a display window in a shop, car or a showcase, grabbing valuables, and making a quick getaway, without concern for setting off alarms or creating noise.
Recent smash and grab crimes have also involved the smashing of car windows and grabbing anything which was in the back sit.
Some say they’re just a crime of occasion less-than-scrupulous individuals see as a means to an end, while others say it could be a gang-related phenomenon.
“We have embraced technology in our crime fighting initiatives although behind, we are catching up and at speed. We would like to thank all the individuals and companies that have partnered the Police to fight crime, particular mention to this local Avondale Company that has donated and launched this project with us making use of the powerful Night vision ,Dahua IP Cameras” added the station.
