Does your dad still use Gmail? It’s like, ugh, Mudhara (Old Man), get with the times, right? Apparently, he’s not alone. It looks like Minister of Higher & Tertiary Education, Science & Technology Development, Prof Jonathan Moyo still uses his Gmail, and that email address has been hacked.
According to research done by Techunzipped, most government officials in Zimbabwe use their private mostly Gmail and Yahoo for official Government business. And we hope that not the case with Honourable J Moyo.
“A criminal has, or criminals have, hacked & hijacked my Gmail account this afternoon. I’ve reported the crime to all relevant authorities!” Professor Moyo said on Twitter.
There are some actions which a hacker can take that will allow him/her to be able to read your email without logging into your Gmail account.
These include using Gmail for mobile, the IMAP feature, email forwarding, and so on. While Gmail’s “last account activity” feature can be helpful, there are also other methods of looking into the safety of your Gmail account and keeping it protected.
The email hack could have happened because of a number of factors like phishing email or he had logged in on an unsecured device.
Not emails have been released, however, because this has been his main email, confidential or too sensitive emails may be at risk, raising questions over what content might have been accessed by hackers.
