Computational Law & Blockchain Festival Kicks-Off

Legal Hackers, a global movement of lawyers, policymakers, technologists, and academics have organized the first ever annual Computational Law & Blockchain Festival which is set to run from the 16th to the 18th of March 2018.

The three-day global event will bring together software developers, hackers, designers, lawyers, policymakers, researchers, and students who want to co-create the future of law, legal practice, and policy, through blockchain technology solutions.
Zimbabwe’s own chapter of Legal Hackers has collaborated with the Blockchain Association of Zimbabwe to take part in the global event.
As other chapters of Legal Hackers host their own local events around the world during this three day period, Zimbabwe will also be participating, focusing on Zimbabwean relevant use cases of blockchain technology.

The event will feature presentations on how the blockchain is being used in Zimbabwe, discussions on Blockchain technology as well as the legal aspects concerning the use of Blockchain Technology in Zimbabwe.

There will also be a Hackathon challenges which will run from Saturday 17 March to Sunday the 18th of March, with prizes lined up for winners.

What is Blockchain?

The blockchain is a public, decentralized, distributed digital ledger which securely records all the transactions made by its users on a network of computers. It was first used in 2009.

It operates as a peer-to-peer network; meaning that everyone on the network can transact with one another without passing through an intermediary.

Its biggest and most visible use case so far has been through cryptocurrencies like Bitcoin which are processed on the blockchain.

These currencies draw their main value points such as decentralization, security, and immutability from the core elements of the blockchain.

There are, however, other uses of blockchain technology such as the development of cryptographically secured legal contracts, enforced copyrights through encryption and even the creation of secure voting systems.

It is anticipated that the event will be platform for the development of some practical legal solutions through this technology.
The local partners of the event are Telco – a Zimbabwean Internet Access Provider and Golix , Zimbabwe’s largest cryptocurrencies exchange and blockchain centred company.
