The Zimbabwe Online Content Creators (ZOCC) has learnt with great consternation and aberration of the abduction and torture of its member, Samantha/Gonyeti of Bustop TV last night by as yet unidentified gunmen in masks.
These men also reportedly assaulted Gonyeti’s family members before abducting her and later on torturing and dumping her in the bushes in the middle of the night.
It is shocking and totally unacceptable that this cowardly act happens under “the new dispensation” where we all thought such acts were now buried in the past.
This incident comes hot on the heels of a threat made to the bustop TV crew at the heroes acre on heroes day by suspected government officials, who accused Bustop TV of being “pro-opposition”.
There is need for authorities to walk the talk and live up to their word of creating a safe environment for content creators, journalists and indeed all citizens at large.
This culture of fear and intolerance must be nipped in the bud before it consumes us all. It does not help us as a people but only goes to divide us as a nation.
ZOCC calls on the authorities to institute an immediate and thorough investigation into this dastardly and regrettable act and bring the perpetrators to book. Society should have no place for such barbarians.
We will be soon seeking attention from the ministries of information and home affairs for redress concerning the security Of content creation and creators in Zimbabwe.
