Facebook Owned The App Market For The Last Decade

Facebook and its family of apps have dominated as most downloaded apps of the decade with main app Facebook, Messenger, WhatsApp, and Instagram grabbing the top four spots. According to data analytics platform App Annie, Facebook has dominated the mobile space representing the four most downloaded apps of the decade (the 2010-2019 period).

It’s not really a surprise to see that social media has dominated the app market for the entire decade it wouldn’t be a stretch to say it’s dominated our lives for that same amount of time. But it might be a revelation for some that Facebook and its subsidiaries snagged every top spot available.

“Communication and social media apps are consumer favorites, accounting for 7 of the top 10 apps by downloads this decade,” said App Annie.

Other most downloaded apps of this decade were Snapchat (fifth), Skype (sixth), TikTok (seventh), UC Browser (eighth), YouTube (ninth) and Twitter (10th) on the list.

“Tinder was the most successful dating app of the decade in terms of consumer spend, coming in second place in the overall ranking behind Netflix,” said the report.

Against all odds, TikTok made the list despite the fact that it’s literally been just under two years since China’s ByteDance bought Musical.ly, merged it with its own lip-synching app, and released what we now know as TikTok. That’s what growing an amazing 614 million users this past year will do for you.

Interestingly, eight of the top 10 are made or owned by American companies. That is unlikely to be the case for the next decade, as the U.S. is now in mobile maturity, and countries like India, Malaysia, and to some extent China, are still growing.

In other data from App Annie, the top 10 most-downloaded games of the decade include:

  1. Subway Surfers
  2. Candy Crush Safa
  3. Temple Run 2
  4. My Talking Tom
  5. Clash of Clans
  6. Pou
  7. Hill Climb Racing
  8. Minion Rush
  9. Fruit Ninja
  10. 8 Ball Pool

The games with the most revenue, however, lean heavily towards battle and team games like Clash of Clans, Game of War – Fire Age, Honor of Kings, and Puzzle & Dragons.
