Zimbabwe yesterday received a consignment of personal protective equipment（PPE）from two Chinese firms for the fight against Covid-19.
The batch of PPEs including surgical face masks, protective suits and goggle were donated by Telecommunications giant Huawei and PD Times Technology.
Receiving the donation, the First Lady Auxillia Mnangagwa, who is the Angel of Hope Foundation patron highly commended the companies for their gesture. She said the equipment comes at a time when it is very much needed by frontline health workers across the country.
“The equipment is going to help our frontline workers in order for them to be protected against this Covid-19. Everything that you have brought is what Zimbabwe is looking for because we want this also to be spread to all our provinces and making sure the frontline staff is protected…your kind gesture has shown us that you have not left the people of Zimbabwe alone,” the first lady said.
The First Lady who is also the country’s Health Ambassador added that the PPEs would be utilized by frontline health workers in all 10 provinces across the country.
Jason Shao, managing director at Huawei Zimbabwe said Huawei, as the country’s long term ICT partner, has been making its unique contribution to the country’s social-economic development for more than 20 years.
“We feel it is our obligation, as a part of Zimbabwe and as a concerned party, to support Zimbabwe on this critical battle against Covid-19 through the Angel of Hope Foundation.”
The First lady, through her Angel of Hope Foundation, has been reaching out to local and international partners in the fight against the virus.
Recognizing Huawei, the first lady said this is a company that has been working with Zimbabwe in so many ways, including empowering the youth in the country.
“Huawei has trained our tertiary students, training them on ICT, and it is a big program for Zimbabwe. It is taking our students going to China to learn ICT,” she said.
Madam Wang Wei, wife to Chinese Ambassador to Zimbabwe, Mr Guo Shaochun, who also attended the ceremony said, China and Zimbabwe were not just friends, but brothers and sisters with a tradition of standing by each other in the face of challenges, including the current coronavirus pandemic.
